FIFA Clears Balogun for US World Cup Clash Against Belgium After Suspending Ban

United States forward Folarin Balogun has been cleared to play in his country's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium after FIFA suspended the implementation of his one-match ban.
Balogun was shown a straight red card during the United States victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 for a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic.
Under Article 10.5 of FIFA's World Cup disciplinary regulations, a direct red card ordinarily carries an automatic one-match suspension, ruling the player out of the next fixture.
However, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has now suspended the enforcement of that sanction, making the 25-year-old available for the knockout encounter against Belgium.
The decision comes after earlier reports indicated that teams could not appeal either a straight red card or the automatic suspension attached to it.
Confirming the ruling, FIFA said Balogun received a one-match suspension for breaches of Articles 14 and 66 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code but added that the sanction's implementation had been suspended for a probationary period of one year.
According to the world football governing body, the suspension will only take effect if Balogun commits another offence of a similar nature and seriousness during the probation period.
"In line with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year," FIFA said in a statement.
The governing body added that if the striker commits another comparable disciplinary offence within that period, the suspended sanction would automatically be activated in addition to any new punishment imposed.
Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code allows FIFA's judicial bodies to fully or partially suspend the implementation of disciplinary measures under specified conditions.
Balogun's availability is a significant boost for the United States as the team prepares to face Belgium for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
