Fatal School Flogging: Anambra Teacher In Police Custody After 12-Year-Old Pupil DiesA teacher declared wanted in connection with the alleged fatal flogging of a 12-year-old pupil in Anambra State has surrendered to the police, marking a significant development in the investigation into the incident.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed on Saturday that the suspect, Mrs. Dim Ebere, 47, voluntarily presented herself at the Neni Police Station in Anaocha Local Government Area after security operatives intensified efforts to locate her.
Mrs. Ebere had been sought by the police following allegations that a pupil died after reportedly sustaining injuries from a flogging at a school in Adazi-Enu, Anambra State.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect's surrender followed sustained operations by the Command's Safe School Protection Squad, working alongside officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters.
He added that the police also engaged community leaders, the traditional institution and other stakeholders in Adazi-Ani, whose cooperation contributed to the suspect's decision to report herself to the authorities.
According to Ikenga, the suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, where detectives will conclude investigations into the case.
"Following sustained manhunt operations by the Anambra State Police Command's Safe School Protection Squad, in collaboration with officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, and continuous engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Adazi-Ani, the principal suspect, Mrs. Dim Ebere, aged 47, has voluntarily presented herself at the Neni Police Station," the statement said.
"The suspect is currently in police custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, where the ongoing investigation will be concluded."
The police command commended members of the Adazi-Ani community, the traditional institution and other stakeholders for their support throughout the operation, describing their cooperation as instrumental in securing the suspect's surrender.
Ikenga also assured the family of the deceased pupil and members of the public that the command remains committed to conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring that justice is served.
"The family of the deceased and members of the public are hereby assured that the Command remains committed to ensuring that justice is served," he said.
The police further appealed for calm, urging residents not to resort to self-help or take the law into their own hands while investigations continue.
The command also encouraged members of the public to continue providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and support other policing operations across the state.
The case has attracted widespread public attention and renewed discussions about discipline in schools, child protection and the need to ensure that disciplinary measures in educational institutions comply with established laws and safeguarding standards.
