England Beat Norway 2-1 After Extra Time, Set Up World Cup Semi-Final Showdown

Jude Bellingham produced another match-winning performance as England came from behind to defeat Norway 2-1 after extra time and secure a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Just five days after scoring twice in England's knockout victory over Mexico, Bellingham again proved decisive, netting an equaliser before scoring the extra-time winner to send Thomas Tuchel's side into the last four.

England will now face either Argentina or Switzerland in Wednesday's semi-final in Atlanta as they continue their quest for a first World Cup title since 1966.

The Three Lions endured a difficult evening in the hot and humid conditions in Miami and fell behind in the 36th minute when Andreas Schjelderup's attempted cross unexpectedly looped over goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and into the net.

Norway nearly doubled their advantage before the break. Alexander Sorloth first fired narrowly over before wasting a golden opportunity on a two-on-one counter-attack, choosing not to square the ball to Erling Haaland.

England capitalised on that missed opportunity in first-half stoppage time.

Collecting Anthony Gordon's pass just outside the penalty area, Bellingham drove past his marker before firing a low finish into the bottom corner to restore parity and send the teams into the interval level at 1-1.

Norway thought they had regained the lead in the second half when Torbjorn Heggem found the net, but the goal was ruled out after Haaland was adjudged to have fouled Elliot Anderson in the build-up.

The Scandinavians continued to threaten, with Kristoffer Ajer striking the crossbar from close range, while England struggled to create clear-cut chances despite dominating possession.

As the contest drifted towards a penalty shootout, Bellingham again stepped up.

In the 93rd minute, substitute Morgan Rogers unleashed a long-range effort that goalkeeper Orjan Nyland could only parry into the danger area. Bellingham reacted quickest, stabbing home the rebound from close range to complete England's comeback and secure another dramatic knockout victory.

The brace took Bellingham's tally to six goals at the tournament, level with Harry Kane and one behind Norway striker Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot.

It also marked his second consecutive World Cup knockout match with two goals, making him the first player since Diego Maradona to score braces in back-to-back knockout games at the tournament.

England manager Thomas Tuchel praised the result but admitted his side fell well below the standards expected of them.

"We made life very, very difficult for ourselves today," Tuchel said after the match.

"The result is fantastic, we're in the last four. It's amazing. I'm not happy with the performance.

"In every sense. The commitment is there but we made life very difficult for us in the way we played. Sloppy, tactical mistakes, not fast enough. Not repetitive enough. We were lucky enough."

Tuchel reserved special praise for Bellingham, describing the midfielder as "world class."

Bellingham, however, brushed aside suggestions that England's performance should overshadow the achievement of reaching another World Cup semi-final.

"It's difficult out there. It's a tough shift," he said.

"All the players are putting in a tough shift. So my thoughts and appreciation go to the players who put in a good shift out there."

Captain Harry Kane also acknowledged England's display left room for improvement but backed Tuchel's assessment.

"It still feels like there's a part of him that knows we can do better, which in a way is a good thing," Kane said.

"If we're in the semi-finals of a World Cup and can improve still, then we can only take that as a positive.

"We had the most important ingredients as a team. If we can start ticking a little bit better with the ball in possession, then we'll have a good couple of games ahead."

For Norway, the defeat marked a disappointing end to an impressive tournament despite the presence of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, who struggled to influence proceedings and was substituted during extra time after managing only two shots throughout the contest.

England now move within one victory of another World Cup final, with Bellingham's remarkable form continuing to fuel hopes that the Three Lions can finally end six decades of waiting for football's biggest prize.
