Defending champions Argentina survived a determined challenge from Switzerland before securing a 3-1 extra-time victory in a dramatic World Cup quarter-final to book a semi-final showdown with England.
Julian Alvarez produced the decisive moment in sweltering Kansas City, curling a magnificent 25-yard strike beyond Gregor Kobel to finally break Switzerland's resistance after more than 100 minutes of fierce competition.
Lautaro Martinez added a late third on the counter-attack as Argentina punished a tiring Swiss side that had battled bravely despite playing much of the contest with 10 men.

Lionel Scaloni's side will now face England on Wednesday in Atlanta as they continue their pursuit of back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
Argentina made the perfect start when Alexis Mac Allister glanced Lionel Messi's corner into the net after only 10 minutes, giving the South Americans an early advantage.
Rather than build on the lead, however, Argentina gradually surrendered control as Switzerland settled into the contest and began creating the better chances.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was forced into several important saves, denying Dan Ndoye, Breel Embolo and Granit Xhaka as Switzerland repeatedly threatened an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute.

Ndoye combined brilliantly with Ricardo Rodriguez before calmly sliding his finish through the legs of Martinez to deservedly level the score after Switzerland's impressive second-half display.
The turning point came just five minutes later in one of the tournament's most controversial moments.
Embolo appeared to be fouled by Leandro Paredes near the halfway line, prompting the referee to caution the Argentine midfielder. However, following a Video Assistant Referee review under the mistaken identity protocol, replays showed there had been no contact and that Embolo had simulated the challenge.
The referee rescinded Paredes yellow card and instead issued Embolo a second booking for simulation, sending the Swiss striker off to the disbelief of his teammates and supporters.

Reduced to 10 men, Switzerland defended resolutely and pushed the match into extra time before Argentina's superior attacking quality finally proved decisive.
Alvarez settled the contest with a superb curling strike from outside the penalty area that gave Kobel no chance and restored Argentina's lead.
As Switzerland committed players forward in search of another equaliser, Lautaro Martinez finished a swift counter-attack to seal victory and send the reigning champions into the semi-finals.
Although Messi did not score for the first time at this World Cup, the Argentina captain continued to make history.

His assist for Mac Allister's opener was his 10th in World Cup competition, making him the first player ever to reach double figures for assists in the tournament.
Argentina also extended another remarkable record, scoring in their 15th consecutive World Cup match while registering at least two goals in their 11th straight game at the tournament, setting a new World Cup record for consecutive matches with multiple goals.
Despite the defeat, Switzerland left the tournament with plenty of credit after matching the world champions for long periods.

The Swiss were arguably the better side for much of normal time before Embolo's dismissal shifted momentum decisively in Argentina's favour.
The loss also extended Switzerland's frustrating record in major tournaments, with the nation now having lost all six quarter-finals they have contested at World Cups and European Championships.

Argentina, meanwhile, move within two victories of retaining the World Cup and now face another stern examination against an England side inspired by Jude Bellingham as two of football's traditional heavyweights battle for a place in the final.
