Traders and residents on Thursday staged a protest at Oja Oba Market in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, calling on the state government to reduce taxes and levies imposed on businesses.
The protesters, who gathered at the popular market chanting slogans, said the current tax burden was making it increasingly difficult for them to sustain their businesses and meet their daily needs.
They lamented that the high taxes and levies had pushed many traders to the brink of shutting down their businesses.
Some of the demonstrators said the increase in levies and daily dues had significantly reduced their profits, leaving them with little capital to reinvest in their businesses.
They appealed to the Ekiti State Government to engage market leaders and other stakeholders in dialogue to review the tax regime and adopt measures that would not cripple commercial activities in the state.
