President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerian youths to take a more active role in nation-building, warning that democracy fails when citizens lose confidence in the electoral process.
Speaking on Thursday during his Democracy Day address to the nation, Tinubu called for peaceful, transparent and credible governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. He directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and political parties to uphold the integrity of the polls.
“Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here and vote here,” Tinubu told young Nigerians. “Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship.”
The President described young people as critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s future, saying their talents, innovation and civic engagement would determine the country’s direction. His remarks come amid growing concerns over youth migration and political disengagement.
Tinubu said public trust in elections is essential to democratic survival and growth. “I urge INEC, security agencies and all political parties to ensure these polls are peaceful and credible. Democracy fails when citizens doubt the process,” he stated.
He commended the National Assembly, the judiciary, the media and civil society organisations for their role in sustaining accountability and democratic development.
As Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, Tinubu called on citizens to see democracy as a collective responsibility that requires participation, vigilance and continuous engagement. He urged Nigerians to reject cynicism and division and embrace unity, hope and confidence in the country’s democratic future.
“While the founding fathers secured independence and the heroes of June 12 fought for democracy, the task before this generation is to strengthen democratic institutions and build a prosperous nation where opportunity is available to all,” the President said.
