Colombia 1-0 Ghana: Arias Fires Colombia Into World Cup Last 16 as Black Stars Crash Out

Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Jhon Arias first-half strike secured a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana on Friday night, ending the Black Stars campaign with a disappointing attacking display.
Nestor Lorenzo's side controlled the contest from start to finish, creating numerous chances and extending their unbeaten run in regulation time at the World Cup to seven matches.
The victory sends Colombia into a last-16 meeting with Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday, while Ghana bow out after failing to register a single shot on target.
Playing in sweltering conditions in Kansas City, Colombia made a bright start despite suffering an early injury setback when striker Jhon Córdoba limped off with a groin problem inside the opening 10 minutes.
His replacement, Luis Suarez, made an immediate impact.
In the 14th minute, Suarez burst down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross to the far post, where Arias arrived unmarked to guide a composed first-time volley beyond goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi.
Ghana defender Alidu Seidu, who had only moments earlier replaced the injured Marvin Senaya, failed to track Arias' run as Colombia seized the initiative.
The South Americans could have put the game beyond doubt long before full-time.

Luis Diaz missed a clear opportunity after dragging his effort wide with only Zigi to beat, while Suarez headed another promising chance off target.
Zigi kept Ghana alive with a string of impressive saves, including an excellent stop to claw Johan Mojica's header away from goal just before half-time.
After the restart, Colombia continued to dictate proceedings.
Richard Rios, who replaced veteran captain James Rodriguez at the interval, fired narrowly wide moments after coming on.
Diaz thought he had doubled Colombia's lead shortly afterwards, but his finish was ruled out for offside after Jefferson Lerma's cross.

The Liverpool forward was then denied one-on-one by another superb save from Zigi following an unselfish pass from Gustavo Puerta.
Juan Fernando Quintero also came close with a powerful long-range strike, while Davinson Sanchez saw a downward header kept out by the busy Ghana goalkeeper.
Ghana rarely threatened Colombia's defence throughout the contest.
Thomas Partey came closest for the Black Stars, narrowly missing the target inside the opening minute before dragging another low effort wide in the second half.
However, Carlos Queiroz's side failed to register a single shot on target, the first time Ghana have finished a World Cup match without testing the opposition goalkeeper.
The Black Stars managed just four shots across the entire match and only four shots on target throughout their four-game tournament, highlighting the attacking problems that ultimately undermined their campaign.
Premier League forward Antoine Semenyo also endured a frustrating tournament, finishing without recording a single shot on target in any of Ghana's four matches.
Colombia continue to strengthen their credentials as one of the tournament's surprise contenders.

The South Americans produced 20 attempts, including eight on target and have now kept three consecutive clean sheets while remaining unbeaten in 90 minutes throughout the competition.
Their only concern may be converting dominance into more goals, having created numerous chances without adding to Arias' decisive strike.
Nevertheless, Lorenzo's disciplined and energetic side will head into Tuesday's Round of 16 clash against Switzerland full of confidence, knowing victory could set up a mouth-watering quarter-final against defending champions Argentina.
