Spain 3-0 Austria: Oyarzabal Double Ends 16-Year World Cup Knockout Wait

Spain ended a 16-year wait for a FIFA World Cup knockout victory with a commanding 3-0 win over Austria in Los Angeles, booking their place in the Round of 16 with one of their most convincing performances of the tournament.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice, while Pedro Porro added the second as the European champions comfortably dismantled Austria to secure their first World Cup knockout win since defeating the Netherlands in the 2010 final.

Luis de la Fuente's side will now face either Portugal or Croatia in the last 16, while goalkeeper Unai Simon celebrated a fourth consecutive clean sheet as Spain maintained one of the tournament's strongest defensive records.

Spain dominated possession from the opening whistle but found Austria difficult to break down during the early stages.

They thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Marc Cucurella fired home after a partially cleared corner, only for the effort to be ruled out after Pau Cubarsí was adjudged to have fouled Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

The decision did little to slow Spain's momentum.

Schlager was forced into a series of outstanding saves, first diving low to deny Oyarzabal before producing a remarkable double stop by tipping Alex Baena's free-kick onto the crossbar and blocking Lamine Yamal's follow-up effort with his chest.

The pressure finally paid off in the 36th minute.

Cucurella delivered a low cross from the left, and Oyarzabal arrived perfectly to sweep the ball home from 12 yards for the opening goal.

Spain continued to dictate play after the break and doubled their advantage just three minutes past the hour mark.

Patient build-up ended with Baena delivering an inviting cross for right-back Pedro Porro, who timed his run brilliantly before heading beyond Schlager to make it 2-0.

Austria, making their first World Cup knockout appearance since 1954, rarely threatened in response.

Substitute Sasa Kalajdzic came closest when he headed over the bar with his first touch, but it proved to be one of the few meaningful opportunities created by the Austrians.

Spain wrapped up victory in the 89th minute when Cucurella once again turned provider.

The left-back threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into Oyarzabal's path, and the striker calmly slid his finish past Schlager to score his fourth goal of the 2026 World Cup.

The victory not only secured Spain's place in the Round of 16 but also ended a frustrating World Cup knockout run that had stretched back to their triumph in South Africa in 2010.

Since lifting the trophy, Spain had failed to win another knockout match, exiting at the group stage in 2014 before suffering penalty defeats to Russia in 2018 and Morocco in 2022.

Against Austria, however, there was little sign of that recent history.

Spain registered 10 shots on target after managing only 16 across their three group-stage matches, underlining their growing attacking confidence as the tournament enters its decisive stages.

Lamine Yamal once again impressed despite not getting on the scoresheet.

The 18-year-old repeatedly troubled makeshift Austrian left-back Konrad Laimer with his pace and dribbling and was unfortunate not to score late on after David Alaba cleared his goal-bound effort off the line.

Defensively, Spain were equally impressive.

Unai Simon was rarely called into serious action as La Roja became only the second team, alongside Mexico, to keep clean sheets in each of their opening four matches at the 2026 World Cup.

With confidence building and key players finding form, Spain head into the last 16 looking increasingly like one of the favourites to challenge for a second World Cup title.
