Canada 0-3 Morocco: Ounahi Double Sends Atlas Lions Into World Cup Quarter-finals

Morocco produced another composed and clinical World Cup performance to defeat co-hosts Canada 3-0 on Saturday, booking a place in the quarter-finals and keeping alive their dream of another historic run on football's biggest stage.

Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a stoppage-time third as the Atlas Lions punished Canada's missed opportunities with ruthless efficiency.

The victory sends Morocco into the last eight, where they will face either France or Paraguay in Boston on Thursday, with the opportunity to reach a second consecutive World Cup semi-final after their groundbreaking campaign in Qatar four years ago.

For Canada, meanwhile, the defeat brought an end to an encouraging tournament on home soil despite an energetic display that deserved far more than the final scoreline suggested.

Backed by a passionate home crowd in Houston, Canada made the brighter start and repeatedly threatened Morocco's goal during an entertaining opening spell.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved why he remains one of the tournament's standout performers, producing two excellent saves inside the opening 11 minutes.

First, he denied Jonathan David from close range after the striker found space inside the penalty area before making another vital stop moments later to frustrate Tani Oluwaseyi, who had brilliantly turned his marker before firing towards goal.

Just as Canada appeared to be gaining control, Morocco suffered an early setback when striker Ismael Saibari was forced off injured after only 22 minutes. Soufiane Rahimi replaced him, a substitution that would ultimately prove decisive.

The opening half remained fiercely contested, with physical battles dominating proceedings. Referee Michael Oliver produced six yellow cards before the interval in a match that became increasingly combative.

Despite Canada's positive first-half display, Morocco emerged after the break looking far sharper.

Five minutes into the second half, Achraf Hakimi's delivery from a set-piece found Ounahi, who calmly slotted past Maxime Crepeau to hand Morocco the breakthrough.

The goal transformed the contest.

With Canada pushing more bodies forward in search of an equaliser, spaces began to appear behind their defence, allowing Morocco's pace on the counter-attack to become increasingly dangerous.

Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute after a lightning-fast transition. This time, Brahim Diaz provided the assist as the midfielder once again kept his composure to double Morocco's advantage and effectively end Canada's hopes.

Rahimi almost added a third minutes later when his header crashed against the underside of the crossbar.

The substitute eventually got the goal his performance deserved deep into stoppage time, finishing another swift Moroccan counter-attack to complete an emphatic 3-0 victory.

While the scoreline suggests a comfortable evening, Morocco's victory was built on resilience as much as quality.

They survived sustained Canadian pressure during the opening half before taking complete control after the interval through disciplined defending, tactical intelligence and devastating efficiency in transition.

It continues an impressive tournament for the Atlas Lions, who have now reached consecutive World Cup quarter-finals following their historic semi-final appearance in Qatar in 2022.

Having already shown they can defend deep, dominate possession and strike on the counter, Morocco are increasingly emerging as genuine contenders rather than outsiders.

Their consistency across different opponents and varying conditions has underlined the maturity of a squad that continues to grow with every tournament.

Canada exit the competition disappointed but with plenty of positives to build upon.

Head coach Jesse Marsch's side matched Morocco for long periods, particularly during the first half, but their inability to convert chances proved costly.

Despite creating the better opportunities early on, the co-hosts failed to score and were eventually punished by Morocco's superior quality in both penalty areas.

The defeat ends Canada's best World Cup campaign in decades, but the performances throughout the tournament have reinforced the country's growing status on the international stage.

Reaction

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch praised his players despite the defeat.

"Across the pitch we had 11 incredible performances in the first half. We were unlucky not to get the lead, then it was the fine details.

"What a privilege our fans have had to root for a team like this that goes after the game. We achieved tremendous success at this World Cup.

"Of course, we would have liked to be the ones celebrating instead of them, but this is as far as we could go. Now it is time to build further upon what we have accomplished."

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi acknowledged Canada's quality while praising his players' response after the break.

"It is a World Cup match and these are difficult games with teams playing for their lives.

"We reacted very well in the second half in the second balls and the duels.

"I have to recognise that Canada were impressive. They played a top match. It was no surprise for us, but in the second half we were able to profit from the space they left us and that was the key."
