
Buhari Remembered: Shettima, Gowon, Aisha Buhari, Governors Attend Memorial Ceremony

Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, state governors and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, were among prominent dignitaries who gathered in Abuja on Sunday for the one-year remembrance ceremony of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The memorial, held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre, Asokoro, attracted political leaders, members of Buhari’s family, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other distinguished Nigerians who came to honour the late former president’s life and legacy.
Also in attendance were former First Lady Aisha Buhari, the late president’s children, former cabinet ministers and aides, serving and former governors, current and former members of the National Assembly, retired and serving diplomats as well as former service chiefs.
The solemn event featured prayers and tributes celebrating Buhari’s contributions to national development during his years in public service.
A commemorative publication titled Tributes and Condolences in Honour of Muhammadu Buhari, containing messages from world leaders and other prominent personalities, was also scheduled to be unveiled as part of the remembrance programme.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian President from 2015 to 2023 after previously leading the country as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985.
He died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic following a prolonged illness.
The former president was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites shortly after his passing, as Nigeria observed a period of national mourning.
The remembrance ceremony continues with prayers and reflections on Buhari’s leadership, public service and enduring impact on Nigeria’s political history.
