President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Nobel Prize-winning playwright and author Professor Wole Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, describing the literary icon as a rare national asset whose contributions to Nigeria and humanity remain invaluable.
In a statement issued by the State House on Sunday, Tinubu praised Soyinka’s decades of influence in literature, democracy advocacy and public affairs, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most respected voices.
“Today, I celebrate a global icon and our nation’s literary star, Professor Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka, on his 92nd birthday, July 13,” the President said.
Tinubu described Soyinka as an exceptional figure whose courage and commitment to justice have inspired generations across the world.
“Exceptional individuals like Professor Soyinka do not come often in a generation, men who illuminate the paths for humanity to follow across diverse endeavours, who are not afraid to go against convention, and who do not let the man die in the face of oppression and injustice,” he stated.
The President highlighted Soyinka’s historic achievement as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, describing the award as a landmark moment for Nigeria and the African continent.
Tinubu also acknowledged Soyinka’s role in Nigeria’s political history, particularly his opposition to military dictatorship and his involvement in campaigns for democratic restoration.
He recalled Soyinka’s participation in the struggle against military rule and the wider democratic movement surrounding the June 12, 1993 election crisis, noting that they both played roles in those challenging periods.
Describing the literary icon as a custodian of Nigeria’s history and values, Tinubu said Soyinka’s continued presence remains a blessing to the country.
“Today, I salute one of our nation’s living repositories of history, knowledge, and courage. That he is with us is a gift we will always treasure. I thank him for his undying faith in the Nigerian project and wise counsel,” the President said.
Tinubu added that Soyinka’s works have shaped generations of writers, scholars, activists and thinkers globally, praising his lasting impact beyond Nigeria’s borders.
“I wish ‘Kongi’ many more years in excellent health,” the President said, using Soyinka’s popular nickname derived from his iconic play “Kongi’s Harvest.”
Soyinka, who was born on July 13, 1934, remains one of Africa’s most celebrated literary figures, with a career spanning drama, poetry, essays, activism and public commentary.
