The military has warned residents of Nigeria’s North-East region to remain vigilant during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations following intelligence reports suggesting possible attacks by remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
The warning was issued by the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI, the Joint Task Force operating in the North-East theatre, as authorities intensified security measures ahead of the Sallah festivities scheduled for Wednesday.
In a security advisory released on Monday, the command disclosed that troops and security assets had already been strategically deployed across vulnerable locations to prevent any attempted attacks during the celebration period.
According to the military, intelligence reports indicate that terrorist groups may attempt to exploit the festive season to target civilian populations using suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices, particularly in crowded public spaces.
“Terrorists may attempt to deploy suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices, particularly in densely populated areas,” the statement warned.
The command, however, assured residents that the threats had been anticipated and that adequate preventive measures were already in place to safeguard lives and property.
Operation HADIN KAI stated that surveillance and reconnaissance assets had been fully activated, while patrols and intelligence operations had been intensified across the region.
The military also disclosed that security agencies were working closely with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), local vigilance groups and other sister agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and rapid response operations.
Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to security risks during the festive period and, where possible, conduct prayers and celebrations close to their homes.
The military further urged members of the public to remain extremely watchful in crowded places such as markets, motor parks, banks and prayer grounds.
Citizens were also encouraged to promptly report suspicious persons, unusual objects or strange movements to security operatives.
The command cautioned against spreading unverified information capable of creating panic, stressing the importance of cooperation between residents and security agencies during ongoing patrols and screening exercises.
Operation HADIN KAI additionally appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders and media organisations to support security efforts by sharing credible information promptly.
The military reiterated its commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups and ensuring peaceful Eid celebrations across the North-East region.
