At 84, Abdulsalami Warns Nigeria: Stop Politicising Security, Unite Against Terror

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has urged Nigerians to unite against terrorism and insecurity, warning that the politicisation of security issues, coupled with the spread of fake news and propaganda, is worsening the country's security challenges.

In a statement issued to mark his 84th birthday, the elder statesman reflected on the state of the nation, expressing concern over the recent wave of violence and the tragic loss of military personnel, including the late General Rabbe.

Abdulsalami described the death of the senior military officer and others who have fallen in the line of duty as a defining moment for Nigeria, stressing that the fight against terrorism requires collective national commitment beyond the efforts of security agencies alone.

"As an officer of the Nigerian Army, the recent tragic death of General Rabbe, along with that of so many others, marks a defining moment for us as a country," he stated.

Drawing from his experience as a former military officer who participated in the Nigerian Civil War and led peacekeeping operations abroad, Abdulsalami acknowledged that many countries around the world are grappling with economic and security challenges, noting that Nigeria is not exempt.

He however, emphasised that maintaining peace and order requires the active participation of all citizens.

"It is clear that the success of attaining this objective must be inclusive. The armed forces and all other security agencies have been very strong in the fight against terrorism. But this is not their fight alone. Every citizen has a stake and it is my plea that Nigerians unite to fight against terror," he said.

The former Head of State expressed concern that security issues have increasingly become subjects of political contestation, arguing that such developments have weakened collective efforts to tackle insecurity.

According to him, terrorists and criminal groups exploit divisions within society, while propaganda and misinformation often provide them with unintended advantages.

"Over the years, politicisation of security matters has worsened the situation and this has brought us to where we are today. Let us join forces with Government and Security agencies at all levels to defeat these evil ones, who do not recognise ethnicity, religion, political party, communal life or other forms of identity," he stated.

He further warned that the growing use of fake news and false narratives on social media platforms has contributed to the persistence of insecurity by emboldening criminal elements.

"Propaganda for political and other selfish gains is also giving oxygen to terrorist groups. The use of fake news on social media to propagate false narratives has served to encourage terrorists and other criminal groups. The success of one terrorist group encourages another and unless we have a rethink, we will continue to promote this crisis," Abdulsalami added.

The former military leader also appealed to members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies not to relent in their efforts despite the challenges confronting them.

He urged the Federal Government to remain resolute and continue taking decisive actions aimed at ending the cycle of violence across the country.

"I urge the armed forces and security agencies to continue their efforts, resolve and firmness in this fight and not to be discouraged. I urge Government should in every manner continue to take decisive actions and resolve to bring tragedy to an end," he said.

Reaffirming his belief in Nigeria's unity and future, Abdulsalami said the country remains worth defending and preserving for future generations.

"Nigeria is the only country we have. I joined the army to defend it with my life. I am a firm believer in a united and peaceful Nigeria. At my age, it was and is still my dream that we hand over to our children a united and prosperous nation."

He appealed to Nigerians to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, stressing that overcoming the nation's security challenges requires collective responsibility.

The former Head of State also offered prayers for the families of fallen security personnel and expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and goodwill over the years.

"I pray for comfort to the families of our fallen heroes," he said.

Abdulsalami concluded the statement by praying for national healing and progress, saying: "May Allah help us rebuild our dear country. God bless Nigeria."
