The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a clean sweep in the Edo State local government election, winning all 18 chairmanship positions and the 192 councillorship seats contested across the state.

The Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, announced the results on Sunday during a news conference in Benin City after the completion of the collation process.

According to him, the election was successfully conducted across the state's 18 local government areas and 192 wards, with accreditation, voting, sorting, counting, collation and declaration of results carried out in line with the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law 2022, as amended in 2026, and other applicable electoral regulations.

"Following the completion of the collation process at the various ward and local government collation centres, the duly appointed ward and local government returning officers announced and declared the results in their respective jurisdictions.

"Based on the official results declared by the returning officers, the commission hereby declares that the All Progressives Congress won the 18 local government chairmanship positions and all the 192 councillorship seats contested in the election," Aifuobhokhan said.

The EDSIEC chairman commended the returning officers for carrying out their duties professionally and impartially, describing the election as peaceful despite what he called minor operational challenges in a few polling areas.

"Overall, the election was conducted peacefully across the state. While there were minor operational challenges in a few locations, these did not substantially affect the overall conduct or outcome of the election," he said.

He attributed some of the delays experienced during the exercise to routine human errors, including difficulties encountered by some voters while locating their names on the voters register.

"We are human. It is only God that does things without mistakes. There may have been delays in some places, such as people trying to locate their names on the voters' register. We apologise if anyone was inconvenienced," he added.

Aifuobhokhan said certificates of return would be presented to the newly elected chairmen and councillors on Monday.

He also praised Governor Monday Okpebholo for providing what he described as an enabling environment for the commission to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.

The commission further commended political parties, candidates, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, election observers, the media and electoral officials for their roles in ensuring a peaceful exercise.

The EDSIEC chairman urged political actors dissatisfied with any aspect of the election to seek redress through the legal channels provided under Nigerian law.

He also called on the elected officials to view their victories as a mandate for selfless service, accountability and inclusive governance at the grassroots.

Twelve political parties participated in the election. However, major opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), boycotted the poll.
