Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has ordered security agencies to immediately track down those responsible for the killing of the state Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku, describing the attack as a calculated attempt to derail the peace being restored across the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed deep shock over the killing of the MACBAN chairman and his associate, who were ambushed by gunmen shortly after attending a peace and security meeting.
Alia said the incident came at a critical time when Benue was witnessing gradual improvements in security and reconciliation across several local government areas.
According to him, the attack is not only tragic but also a direct assault on the dialogue and peace-building initiatives his administration has consistently pursued.
"It is deeply regrettable that this unfortunate incident occurred shortly after a security meeting," the governor said.
He directed security agencies to immediately launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the killings, with clear instructions to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone involved.
The governor also ordered the strengthening of security around community leaders and stakeholders participating in peace-building efforts, stressing that those working for reconciliation must be adequately protected.
While acknowledging the setback, Alia appealed to members of MACBAN and residents of the state to remain peaceful and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions.
"We must not allow those who profit from chaos to succeed in inciting further violence or disrupting the peace we have taken time to build," he stated.
The governor extended his condolences to the family of the late MACBAN chairman and the association, assuring them that his administration remains committed to ensuring justice is served.
"Our administration remains resolute: Benue is a home for peace, and we will not allow the shadows of the past to eclipse the bright future we are currently building," the statement added.
The late Risku was reportedly killed alongside another individual after attending a peace meeting convened to address security concerns in parts of Benue State. Security agencies have since commenced investigations into the attack.
