Africa Day: Putin Salutes Continent’s Progress, Expanding Global Influence

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised African countries for what he described as significant economic, political and social progress, while reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to strengthening strategic relations with the continent.

Putin made the remarks in a congratulatory message issued on Monday to African Heads of State and Government as countries across the continent marked the 2026 Africa Day celebration. Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, which later evolved into the African Union.

According to the Russian leader, African nations have continued to increase their influence on key global issues while advancing regional integration and strengthening institutions aimed at resolving conflicts and promoting development. “Constructive cooperation is expanding within the African Union and several subregional organisations,” Putin stated. “Mechanisms for collective response to local conflicts and crises are also being developed, while integration processes continue to advance steadily.”

The Russian president noted that Africa’s growing diplomatic and economic relevance was reshaping global power dynamics and contributing to the emergence of what he called a more balanced multipolar international system.

Putin said Russia attaches “great importance” to its longstanding ties with African nations, describing the relationship as one rooted in mutual respect, equality and shared aspirations for global fairness. “We are united by the desire to build a just multipolar world based on genuine equality and the supremacy of international law,” he said.

He further argued that the international order should remain free from discrimination, coercion and domination by powerful states.

The Russian leader described Africa Day as a historic symbol of the continent’s triumph over colonialism and its enduring pursuit of peace, freedom, dignity and prosperity.

Putin also expressed optimism ahead of the Third Russia-Africa Summit expected to hold in Moscow later this year, saying the gathering would deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and African states across several strategic sectors.

“I will be glad to welcome African leaders in Moscow,” he added.

“I sincerely wish you sound health and success in your state duties, and peace and well-being to your citizens.”

Russia has significantly expanded its diplomatic and economic engagements across Africa in recent years, particularly in areas including energy, mining, military cooperation, agriculture and infrastructure development.
