2027 Elections: Trump Administration Will Closely Monitor Nigeria’s Polls — US Lawmaker

A United States lawmaker has said the Donald Trump administration will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as Washington increases scrutiny over political developments and governance issues in Africa’s most populous nation.
Congressman Riley Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, said both the US Congress and the Trump administration will be “paying very close attention” to how Nigeria’s elections are conducted and the outcome of the polls.
Speaking in an interview with NoireTV, Moore said the United States is increasingly concerned about electoral processes and governance trends in Nigeria, adding that legislative and executive attention on the country is expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Moore disclosed that the US House of Representatives is currently considering an appropriations bill containing what he described as “strong and aggressive language” relating to Nigeria.
According to him, the proposed legislation includes provisions addressing religious persecution, security assistance, and conditions for continued US support.
He said the bill forms part of broader congressional discussions led by lawmakers who are pushing for stricter oversight of US foreign assistance, particularly in countries facing internal conflict and human rights concerns.
Moore also noted that he is a co-sponsor of separate legislation introduced by Congressman Chris Smith, which focuses on religious freedom issues.
The lawmaker explained that the appropriations bill under consideration could influence the future of US–Nigeria relations, particularly in areas of security cooperation and financial assistance.
He said the proposed measures include reporting requirements for the US Secretary of State on alleged religious persecution and violence in Nigeria, as well as assessments of government responses to insecurity.
Moore added that parts of the bill would require certification that Nigeria is taking “effective steps” to address violence and protect vulnerable communities before certain funds can be fully released.
Reports indicate that the US House Appropriations Committee earlier in April 2026 approved provisions that could withhold a portion of allocated funds to Nigeria pending compliance with specified conditions.
The lawmaker said Nigeria remains a key focus of US foreign policy discussions, especially as the 2027 elections approach.
He added that he continues to engage with members of the Trump administration on issues relating to Nigeria and that these discussions include security, governance, and human rights concerns.
Moore also claimed that congressional attention reflects growing bipartisan interest in Nigeria’s political stability and electoral credibility.
While details of the final legislative outcome remain uncertain, the proposed measures are expected to shape ongoing debates in Washington over aid, diplomacy, and election monitoring in Nigeria ahead of 2027.
