Veteran Nollywood Actor and Theatre Icon Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

Veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker and academic, Kola Oyewo, has died at the age of 80.

His passing was announced on Friday by fellow actor Kunle Afod in a tribute shared on Instagram.

Afod described Oyewo as one of the most influential figures in Nigeria’s theatre and film industry, praising his enduring contributions to the arts.

“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten,” Afod wrote.

Oyewo, who celebrated his 80th birthday in March, began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and rose to prominence for his acclaimed portrayal of Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, he featured in several acclaimed productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Super Story and numerous other stage and screen productions.

Beyond acting, Oyewo made significant contributions to academia, teaching at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University.

His death marks the end of an era for Nigerian theatre and film, leaving behind a legacy that shaped generations of actors, scholars and storytellers.
