President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the newly inaugurated President of the Republic of Benin Romuald Wadagni, at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, in a visit that highlighted the enduring diplomatic and economic ties between the two neighbouring West African nations.
President Wadagni arrived in Lagos on Monday afternoon and was received on arrival by Babajide Sanwo-Olu before proceeding to meet President Tinubu.
The two leaders later held a private meeting lasting approximately 30 minutes, during which they were believed to have discussed issues of mutual interest, including regional security, economic cooperation and the strengthening of bilateral relations between Nigeria and Benin Republic.
Wadagni’s visit comes barely days after he was sworn in as President of Benin Republic, succeeding Patrice Talon following his victory in the April 12, 2026 presidential election.
President Tinubu had been represented at the inauguration ceremony by the Vice President Kashim Shettima, underscoring the importance Nigeria attaches to its relationship with Benin Republic.
As immediate neighbours sharing deep cultural, economic and historical ties, Nigeria and Benin Republic have continued to collaborate on issues ranging from trade and border management to regional security and ECOWAS integration.
The visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic engagements between both countries as the new Beninese administration settles into office.
