At least three worshippers have been killed while 15 others were abducted after suspected bandits attacked a prayer ground in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State. The attack occurred on Saturday night at Ori-Oke Ajaiye in Ikiran Village, where members of a religious congregation had gathered for a vigil.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident on Sunday through its spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi. According to the police, the incident was reported by Pastor Adebayo Abiodun of Ijo Ajaye Ati Igbala, Ekerin Village, who stated that armed men stormed the prayer ground at about 8:30 p.m. and opened fire on worshippers.
“The armed hoodlums invaded the prayer ground, firing sporadically, killing three persons while abducting 15 others to an unknown destination,” the police spokesperson stated.
Security operatives were immediately mobilised to the area following the distress report as authorities launched a coordinated rescue operation.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, described the attack as “barbaric, callous and unacceptable,” assuring residents that efforts were underway to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend those responsible.
According to the police command, the rescue mission involves tactical teams, the Police Mobile Force, intelligence units and the police drone surveillance team. “The Commissioner of Police directed a comprehensive tactical and intelligence-driven operation involving the Police Drone Team, PMF personnel, intelligence units and other operational assets for a coordinated rescue mission,” the statement added.
The police also assured families of the victims that security agencies remain committed to restoring calm and bringing the perpetrators to justice. Residents were urged to remain calm and support security agencies with credible information capable of assisting ongoing operations.
The latest attack adds to growing security concerns in parts of Kwara State and surrounding regions where armed groups have increasingly targeted rural communities, travellers and religious gatherings.
