Swiss police have arrested a man after three people were injured in a stabbing attack at a busy train station in the city of Winterthur.
Authorities confirmed that the victims Swiss nationals aged 28, 43 and 52 were rushed to hospital following the attack, which occurred during the Thursday morning rush hour.
Police identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Swiss citizen and said investigations into the motive behind the attack were ongoing.
According to eyewitness accounts reported by local media, panic erupted at the station shortly after 8:30am local time when a man allegedly moved through the underpass attacking people with a bladed weapon. One eyewitness working in a nearby office building told local newspapers he heard the suspect shouting “Allahu Akbar” moments before the attack began.
Another witness, a taxi driver interviewed by Zurich-based newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, claimed the suspect appeared to move randomly around the station while attacking passersby.
Local media also reported that a group of schoolchildren happened to be passing through the area at the time of the incident.
In one dramatic moment, a teacher was reportedly seen standing protectively in front of the children while chaos unfolded around the station. Some victims were said to have suffered injuries while attempting to flee the scene.
Photographs published by Swiss news outlets showed large sections of the station cordoned off as armed police and emergency responders secured the area. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the attack is being treated as terrorism-related, but investigators say all possibilities remain under review.
The incident has renewed concerns over rising violent attacks in parts of Europe amid heightened security alerts across several countries.
