Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a teacher and abducting an unspecified number of students who were writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination.

The attack occurred at about 9:00 a.m on Monday, throwing the school and the surrounding community into panic as heavily armed insurgents stormed the area on motorcycles.

According to available reports, the attackers, who were dressed in military camouflage, opened fire indiscriminately before invading the school premises and whisking away an unknown number of students into the bush.

A teacher was reportedly killed during the assault, while another sustained injuries. However, security authorities say they are still verifying reports of casualties.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said an unspecified number of students remain unaccounted for following the attack.

"At about 9 a.m, an unspecified number of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists attacked a secondary school and shot sporadically into the air.

"During the attack, an unspecified number of students were abducted, while some are still missing," Daso said.

The police spokesperson added that the command could not immediately confirm reports that a teacher was killed during the attack.

He disclosed that a joint security operation involving the Nigerian military, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and the Area Command in Askira/Uba had commenced an intensive search-and-rescue mission.

According to Daso, security personnel are combing nearby forests and surrounding communities in an effort to rescue the abducted students and track down the attackers.

The latest assault highlights the persistent security threat in parts of Borno State despite sustained military operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.

Authorities have yet to disclose the exact number of students abducted, while rescue efforts remain ongoing.
