Substitute Johan Manzambi delivered a stunning impact from the bench, scoring twice as Switzerland produced a devastating late surge to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What appeared destined to end in a frustrating goalless draw erupted into life in the closing stages at SoFi Stadium, with all five goals arriving in a dramatic final 16 minutes.

The breakthrough finally came in the 74th minute when Manzambi, who had been on the pitch for less than three minutes, reacted quickest inside the penalty area to volley home from close range. It was only the 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder’s fourth touch of the match and a goal that completely changed the complexion of the contest.
Bosnia’s hopes of mounting a response suffered a major setback moments later when defender Tarik Muharemovic received a straight red card for bringing down Breel Embolo as the Swiss forward raced clear on goal.

With a numerical advantage, Switzerland seized control.
Ruben Vargas doubled the lead shortly afterwards, curling a precise effort into the bottom corner to reward the Swiss side’s growing dominance.
The winger then turned provider in the 90th minute, delivering a dangerous ball across the box for Manzambi to score his second goal of the evening and effectively put the result beyond doubt.
Bosnia managed a brief moment of celebration when Ermin Mahmic produced a spectacular volley from a corner kick in stoppage time to score his first international goal and reduce the deficit.
However, Switzerland had the final word.
Deep into added time, Djibril Sow was brought down inside the penalty area by Amar Memic, allowing captain Granit Xhaka to step forward and calmly convert from the spot to complete a convincing 4-1 victory.

Until the opening goal, Switzerland had struggled to translate possession and territorial dominance into clear-cut opportunities.
Dan Ndoye came closest for Murat Yakin’s side during the opening hour, firing into the side netting in the first half before seeing an acrobatic bicycle-kick effort tipped over the crossbar after the restart.
Bosnia, meanwhile, defended resolutely and occasionally threatened through veteran striker Edin Dzeko, who made his first appearance at a second World Cup tournament. The 40-year-old led the line effectively but was unable to find the breakthrough before being substituted midway through the second half.

The contest appeared finely balanced until a hydration break disrupted Bosnia’s momentum and Switzerland capitalised ruthlessly thereafter.
Manzambi’s introduction proved decisive, with the youngster showcasing the composure, movement and finishing ability that have reportedly attracted interest from several top European clubs.

The result lifts Switzerland to the summit of Group B with four points and places them in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32.
Bosnia, meanwhile, remain bottom of the group with one point and a goal difference of minus three, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
Despite the heavy defeat, Bosnia can still advance if they secure a positive result in their final group fixture.
Switzerland will face tournament co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on June 24, while Bosnia and Herzegovina take on Qatar in Seattle at the same time.

For Switzerland, however, the story of the night belonged to Manzambi a young substitute who transformed a tense and uneventful contest into a statement victory that could prove pivotal in their World Cup campaign.
