South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His death was confirmed on Saturday by the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa’s Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture.

Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape said an inquest has been opened after Adams body was discovered on Saturday morning at a property on Military Road, Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town.

Police spokesperson F.C. van Wyk said investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.

Played key role in South Africa’s World Cup campaign

Adams was part of South Africa’s squad that reached the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.

The midfielder started two of Bafana Bafana’s three group-stage matches, featuring against Mexico and Czechia, before coming off the bench in South Africa’s decisive 1-0 victory over South Korea on June 24, a result that secured qualification for the knockout stage.

He was an unused substitute when South Africa exited the tournament following a defeat to Canada on June 28.

In a statement, the South African Football Players Union described Adams passing as a devastating loss to the nation.

The union said the midfielder had represented South Africa at the World Cup with pride, courage and distinction, adding that his death was an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs and the wider football community.

It extended condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, his former club Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and everyone whose lives he touched.

Mamelodi Sundowns also expressed profound sadness over the midfielder’s death.

The club said its chairman, the Motsepe family, board, technical team, players, management, staff and supporters were deeply saddened by the loss and prayed for strength and comfort for his family during the difficult period.

The club appealed for privacy to be respected as the family mourns.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, also paid tribute, recalling Adams’ professionalism after the player chose to continue representing the national team despite the death of his grandmother during the World Cup.

According to the minister, Adams commitment to wearing the national colours during such a difficult personal moment reflected his exceptional character and dedication.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also paid tribute, describing Adams death as incredibly sad.

Infantino said the thoughts of FIFA and the global football community were with the midfielder’s family, friends and teammates, adding that Adams would be greatly missed.

Adams had enjoyed a successful rise in South African football.

He joined Mamelodi Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC in January 2025 and helped the club win the CAF Champions League in May 2026.

Following that triumph, he dedicated his winners medal to his late former Stellenbosch teammate Oshwin Andries, who died in 2023 after a stabbing incident.

His death comes after another tragic loss for Stellenbosch FC earlier this year, following the passing of young player Jeandre Gaffoor.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Adams death remain ongoing, while tributes continue to pour in from across South Africa and the international football community.
