The Senate has confirmed Dr Zainab Marwa as the North-East representative on the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), while beginning legislative consideration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request for the confirmation of Lamido Yuguda Abubakar as Chairman of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Marwa’s confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on NDDC during plenary.

The committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Patrick Ndubueze, presented the report on behalf of the Chairman, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, after which lawmakers approved the nomination.

President Tinubu had forwarded Marwa’s name to the Senate in May to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the former North-East representative on the NDDC board, Abdulrazak Namdas.

Namdas resigned from the position on March 30, 2026 to pursue his ambition of contesting the governorship election in Adamawa State.

In his communication to the Senate, which was read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu said Marwa’s nomination was made in accordance with Section 2 of the Niger Delta Development Commission Establishment Act.

The President explained that the appointment was necessary to maintain North-East representation on the board and ensure the continued effectiveness of the commission.

Following the presentation of the committee’s report, the Senate confirmed Marwa’s appointment.

Meanwhile, the Senate has received a separate request from President Tinubu seeking the confirmation of Lamido Yuguda Abubakar as Chairman of the Board of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

The President’s request was contained in a letter read by Senate President Akpabio during plenary.

Tinubu said Yuguda’s nomination was made in line with the provisions of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) (Amendment) Act.

According to the President, the appointment became necessary following the exit of the immediate past chairman of the AMCON board.

He urged the Senate to give the nomination expeditious consideration.

The Senate President subsequently referred Yuguda’s nomination to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions for screening and further legislative action.

The committee was given two weeks to submit its report to the Senate.

The development means Yuguda’s confirmation will depend on the outcome of the committee’s screening and subsequent consideration by the Senate.
