A joint security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has led to the arrest of 46 suspected illegal immigrants in parts of Ogun State.

The operation was conducted in Ijebu Imushin, Ijebu Ilese and neighbouring communities within the Ijebu axis of the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abeokuta, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 35 Artillery Brigade, Major Idereghi Akari, disclosed that the suspects comprise 18 nationals of Burkina Faso, 23 from Côte d’Ivoire, four from Togo and one from Senegal.

According to the Army spokesman, preliminary investigations indicate that the individuals had allegedly resided in Ogun State for approximately six months without valid immigration documentation.

The suspects include 36 males and 10 females.

“During interrogation, the suspects claimed to be merchants and workers affiliated with QNet, an online marketing platform,” Akari stated.

He explained that the arrests were made during a targeted security operation aimed at strengthening internal security and addressing concerns relating to illegal migration.

Following the operation, the suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service, Ogun State Command, for further investigation and appropriate administrative action.

The Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier-General Friday Onu, commended the troops and collaborating security agencies for their professionalism and coordination during the exercise.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.

He noted that the operation demonstrates the commitment of security agencies to tackling illegal migration, safeguarding communities and enhancing national security.

The authorities have not announced any criminal charges against the suspects, while investigations by the Nigeria Immigration Service continue.
