Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will lead the state’s delegation to a series of high-level engagements during the 2026 London Climate Action Week (LCAW), as Lagos seeks to strengthen its position as a leading subnational government driving climate action and sustainable development.

The week-long event, scheduled to hold from June 20 to June 28 in London, will bring together policymakers, government leaders, climate experts, investors and development partners from across the world to discuss strategies for addressing climate challenges and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile. According to the statement, the Lagos delegation will use the platform to showcase the state’s climate finance initiatives, attract strategic partnerships and highlight ongoing efforts aimed at building resilience against the impacts of climate change.

A major highlight of the governor’s participation will be his attendance at the Local Climate Action Summit, the flagship event for subnational governments during the climate week.

The summit, which will be hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies at Guildhall in London, is expected to bring together governors, premiers, presidents, ministers, mayors and regional leaders from different parts of the world.

Discussions at the summit will focus on strengthening collaboration among governments and accelerating climate action ahead of the next global climate negotiations at COP31. As part of the engagements, Sanwo-Olu is also expected to formalise Lagos State’s intention to join the Under2 Coalition, one of the world’s largest networks of states and regional governments committed to achieving net-zero emissions and strengthening climate resilience.

The process will involve the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Climate Group, aligning Lagos with more than 180 states and regions around the world pursuing ambitious climate and sustainability targets.

The Lagos State Government said the move reflects its determination to deepen international cooperation and leverage global partnerships in tackling environmental challenges while promoting sustainable economic growth.

Speaking ahead of the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu said cities and regional governments have become increasingly important drivers of climate action due to their proximity to communities and their ability to implement practical solutions.

“Cities and regions are increasingly at the forefront of climate action. As the world moves from ambition to implementation, Lagos is demonstrating that subnational governments can build bankable pipelines, attract strategic partnerships and deliver tangible outcomes that improve livelihoods and drive sustainable economic growth,” the governor said.

He noted that Lagos’ participation in the London Climate Action Week underscores the state’s commitment to becoming a global model for climate innovation, resilience-building and green investment.

The governor added that beyond climate commitments, Lagos remains focused on developing practical solutions capable of delivering environmental benefits while supporting economic development and improving the quality of life for residents.

The London Climate Action Week is regarded as one of the world’s largest independent climate events, providing a platform for governments, businesses and civil society organisations to advance climate solutions and mobilise investment towards achieving global climate goals.
