Qatar Out, Bosnia On The Verge: 3-1 Win Puts Europeans Near World Cup History

Bosnia-Herzegovina took a major step toward a historic first appearance in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages after defeating Qatar 3-1 in their final group-stage match on Wednesday.

The victory leaves Bosnia-Herzegovina strongly positioned to progress as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams in the expanded 48-nation World Cup, with a potential Round of 32 clash against co-hosts the United States now emerging as a likely scenario.

Having previously appeared at only one World Cup, in Brazil in 2014, Bosnia-Herzegovina are now on the verge of achieving a landmark milestone in the country's football history.

Teenager Kerim Alajbegovic was the star of the opening half, putting Bosnia ahead in the 29th minute with a superb strike from outside the box.

The 18-year-old drove a powerful effort beyond Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada from around 20 yards, becoming the youngest Bosnian player ever to score at a World Cup and one of the youngest goalscorers in tournament history.

Bosnia-Herzegovina doubled their advantage five minutes later.

A dangerous delivery from Sead Kolasinac created panic inside the Qatar penalty area before a deflection involving Qatar defender Sultan Al-Brake resulted in an own goal that gave Bosnia a commanding 2-0 lead.

Qatar responded before halftime through veteran captain Hassan Al-Haydos, who reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute and briefly revived hopes of a comeback.

The goal ensured Qatar remained within touching distance heading into the second half.

However, Bosnia-Herzegovina regained full control as the match progressed and continued to create the better opportunities.

Their victory was sealed in the 80th minute when Ermin Mahmic found the back of the net to restore the two-goal cushion and put the result beyond doubt.

Mahmic's strike capped an impressive performance from the Europeans and secured three invaluable points in their quest for qualification.

The result also confirmed a disappointing end to the tournament for Qatar, who exit the World Cup without recording a victory.

While the final standings across all groups will determine Bosnia-Herzegovina's official qualification status, the win has significantly strengthened their chances of advancing among the competition's best third-placed teams.

Speaking after the match, Bosnia-Herzegovina coach Sergej Barbarez refused to look too far ahead despite growing expectations that his side will advance.

"I wouldn't like to speculate quite yet," Barbarez said when asked about a possible knockout-round meeting with the United States.

"I think it's best to wait for all the matches to be over and then we know if we are going further and who we'll play against.

"All I can tell you is that all of this is a bonus for us. We will be extremely relieved and we will try to take on any team that comes our way."

Should Bosnia-Herzegovina secure passage into the Round of 32, it would represent the greatest achievement in the nation's World Cup history and a remarkable progression for a team that arrived at the tournament with modest expectations.

For Qatar, the defeat ends another difficult World Cup campaign, with the former Asian champions unable to register a single victory in the competition.
