The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers and sanctioned 31 others in one of its most far-reaching disciplinary exercises in recent times, reaffirming its commitment to enforcing professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
The decisions were taken at the Commission's plenary meeting held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja.
According to the PSC, the four officers were dismissed after they were found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts considered unbecoming of public officers.
The Commission also approved the demotion of 10 senior officers. Three Superintendents of Police (SPs) were reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) were demoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). Five Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) were also reduced to the rank of Inspector.
In addition to the dismissals and demotions, the Commission ordered the compulsory retirement of two officers in the public interest.
Other disciplinary measures approved by the PSC included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five others, warning letters for three officers and a letter of advice issued to one officer.
The Commission, however, cleared seven officers after investigations found no evidence to establish allegations of misconduct against them.
Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, said the Commission would continue to enforce discipline within the Nigeria Police Force and would not tolerate any form of misconduct.
Argungu stressed that officers found wanting would continue to face appropriate sanctions in line with the law and existing regulations, adding that the Commission remains committed to promoting integrity, professionalism and public confidence in policing.
He said the disciplinary actions reflected the Commission's resolve to ensure accountability and maintain high ethical standards within the Nigeria Police Force.
