Presidential Media Team Inspects Federal, Imo Landmark Projects Under Renewed Hope Tour

The Presidential Communications Team, alongside members of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and more than 40 senior journalists, on Wednesday embarked on an inspection tour of major federal and state government projects in Imo State as part of a nationwide media initiative aimed at showcasing ongoing infrastructure development across the South-East.

The inspection formed part of the National Media Tour, an initiative of the Governor Hope Uzodimma-led Renewed Hope Ambassadors in collaboration with the Presidential Media Team.

According to organisers, the exercise is designed to provide Nigerians with firsthand information on the implementation of strategic federal and state government projects while promoting transparency, accountability and greater public awareness of ongoing development efforts.

During the tour, the delegation inspected several completed and ongoing projects, including the 56-kilometre Okigwe–Owerri Road, the 36-kilometre Owerri–Obowo–Umuahia Road, and the ongoing expansion and upgrade of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, where construction of a standard runway is underway.

The team also visited Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, formerly Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, following its recent upgrade by the Federal Government, as well as the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, which has been upgraded to the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Owerri.

Speaking during the inspection, the Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, described the projects as tangible outcomes of the partnership between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government.

He said the expansion of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport is expected to transform the facility into a major logistics and export hub for the South-East, with eight modern warehouses planned to support cargo handling, agricultural exports, trade and investment.

According to Emelumba, several of the projects executed by the state government were financed through the increased fiscal capacity available to states following the economic reforms introduced by the Federal Government.

He highlighted the upgrade of Alvan Ikoku College of Education as one of the state's major educational milestones.

"This is Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education. This place used to be Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, previously owned by the state. Now, the Federal Government has upgraded it to a university less than a year ago.

"What is important here is not just that it has been upgraded. It is a project that has been dear to every government that has ruled Imo State, but none was able to accomplish it because this is one of the oldest Federal Government Colleges of Education in Nigeria.

"Almost all of them had been converted to Federal Universities of Education. Every government in Imo struggled to get it converted but couldn't achieve it until the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma," he said.

The commissioner added that the university upgrade has already created employment opportunities for residents while attracting projects funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

He further stated that improved funding has enabled the Uzodimma administration to accelerate infrastructure development across the state while complementing federal investments in transportation, education and healthcare.

According to him, the projects reflect the shared development vision of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uzodimma, whose administrations are working together to improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of life for citizens.

Also speaking during the tour, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Special Duties, Tunde Rahman, said the successful execution of the projects demonstrates the benefits of collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments.

Rahman commended the Imo State Government for implementing projects that align with the objectives of the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in education.

He also highlighted the importance of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative, noting that it is expanding access to tertiary education by providing financial support for students who might otherwise be unable to continue their studies.

Members of the media delegation commended the quality and pace of work on the projects visited, describing them as visible evidence of the impact of collaboration between the Federal Government and subnational governments in delivering infrastructure and public services.
