Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a planned kidnapping of a Chinese national and arrested two suspects allegedly involved in a plot to demand a ransom of N50 million.
The command disclosed that the suspects were apprehended following intelligence reports indicating an imminent abduction attempt along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway corridor.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said operatives attached to the Obalende Division acted swiftly on credible intelligence and intercepted the suspects before the planned operation could be executed.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had allegedly conspired to abduct the expatriate and demand a ransom of N50 million for his release.
Investigators further uncovered that one of the suspects allegedly exploited his position as an interpreter and driver within the victim’s company to facilitate the plot and provide information capable of aiding the planned abduction.
The police also disclosed that the suspects were working with another accomplice who remains at large.
Efforts are currently underway to track down the fleeing suspect and unravel the full extent of the criminal network behind the plot.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Commending the operatives involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, described the successful intervention as a demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies.
He noted that the operation prevented what could have resulted in a major kidnapping incident and reassured residents and members of the business community of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
The police boss also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to security agencies to aid efforts at combating crime.
