The Oyo State High Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, is set to deliver judgment on Tuesday, July 14, in a landmark case challenging the use of the Islamic hijab in selected government-owned schools with missionary backgrounds.

The case, Suit No. 47/2026, was instituted by five Muslim schoolgirls through their guardians against the Oyo State Government and education authorities. The claimants are seeking judicial enforcement of what they describe as their constitutional right to wear the hijab with their school uniforms.

In a statement issued on Monday, Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, a member of the Oyo State Muslim Community, urged members of the Muslim Ummah to attend the proceedings peacefully. The judgment is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at Court 17 of the High Court in Iyaganku.

The defendants in the suit are the Governor of Oyo State, the Commissioner for Education, the Attorney-General of Oyo State, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

According to Agunbiade, the case goes beyond school dress codes, touching on broader constitutional issues, including freedom of religion, equality before the law, fundamental human rights, and religious accommodation in public educational institutions.
