The Oyo State Government has warned that flooding can contaminate underground water sources, urging residents in affected communities to take precautionary measures to ensure their drinking water is safe.
According to an advisory issued on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the state government noted floodwaters can force contaminated surface water deep underground, potentially polluting groundwater that supplies boreholes, hand-dug wells and, in some cases, water used by packaged water production facilities.
The government said the risk of contamination is highest in communities that have experienced flooding, particularly where the flooding has been widespread or severe.
It advised residents in flood-affected areas to treat all drinking water before use, noting that where flooding is extensive, boiling water alone may not be sufficient and appropriate chemical treatment may be required.
The advisory also urged residents to store drinking water only in clean, covered containers to prevent further contamination.
For communities that have not experienced flooding, the state advised residents to continue observing routine water safety and hygiene practices.
The Oyo State Government further encouraged residents to share the advisory with family members, friends and neighbours to help reduce the risk of waterborne diseases in the aftermath of flooding.
