The Ogun State Government has reiterated its commitment to preventing flooding, warning that buildings obstructing drainage channels will be demolished as part of measures to protect lives and property during the peak of the rainy season.

The Commissioner for Environment, Oladimeji Oresanya, disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television's Morning Brief, where he said the state had intensified flood prevention efforts ahead of the period of expected heavy rainfall between late September and October.

According to Oresanya, the government has already carried out extensive dredging of the Oparun River, which connects to the Ogun River at Isheri, to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.

"We have made preparations, dredging the Oparun River adjoining the Ogun River at Isheri to allow reticulation. We are more than prepared for the challenge coming around the end of September to the month of October," he said.

The commissioner said the state would not tolerate developments that obstruct natural waterways, warning that structures built on drainage channels would be removed to ensure the free flow of floodwaters during periods of heavy rainfall.

He also said the government would strengthen enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal, describing the dumping of refuse into drainage systems as one of the major causes of blocked waterways and urban flooding.

Oresanya urged residents to comply with environmental regulations and avoid actions that could worsen flooding, stressing that the government remained committed to safeguarding communities through proactive flood control measures.
