The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has called for the immediate rescue of a primary school headmaster abducted by gunmen in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of the state.
The union identified the victim as Mr M.K. Owoade, Headmaster of Nomadic Basic School, Ogodu, Igbojaye, who was reportedly kidnapped while working on his farm at about 5:00 p.m on Saturday.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman and Secretary of the union, Mr Fatai Hassan and Mr Salami Olukayode, described the incident as deeply disturbing and urged security agencies to act swiftly to secure Owoade's release.
According to the union, the abduction was brought to the attention of the state leadership through an emergency report from its Itesiwaju Local Government branch.
The NUT said the incident underscores the growing security threats confronting teachers and other education workers, particularly in rural communities.
The union appealed to the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government and all security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted headmaster and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
It also called on the authorities to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities to protect teachers, pupils and other education personnel from criminal attacks.
Expressing solidarity with the victim's family, colleagues and pupils, the union prayed for his safe return and urged its members across the state to remain vigilant in the face of the prevailing security situation.
The union further called for sustained efforts to improve the safety of teachers, stressing that a secure learning environment remains essential to the effective delivery of education in the state.
