The Niger State Government has banned graduation ceremonies in all private schools across the state, directing institutions to replace them with Speech and Prize-Giving Ceremonies to celebrate students’ achievements.

The directive, issued by the Niger State Private Schools Board, is aimed at standardising end-of-session activities in private educational institutions and reducing what the government described as the growing trend of expensive and elaborate graduation celebrations.

In a statement released by the Directorate of Information Services, Niger State Ministry of Information and Orientation, the government said schools should focus on recognising students for academic excellence, good conduct, leadership qualities and other outstanding achievements through Speech and Prize-Giving Ceremonies.

The state government said the decision was informed by concerns that some graduation ceremonies had become increasingly costly, placing additional financial pressure on parents and creating unnecessary competition among schools.

According to the statement, some academic celebrations have shifted away from their educational purpose and contributed to the commercialisation of school activities.

The government explained that the new policy is intended to promote moderation, discipline and ensure that end-of-session events remain focused on learning outcomes and the recognition of genuine academic achievements.

The Niger State Private Schools Board, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Orientation and other relevant stakeholders, is expected to begin statewide sensitisation campaigns to educate schools, parents and communities on the new directive.

Information officers and community mobilisation personnel will also engage private schools and other stakeholders to ensure proper understanding and compliance with the policy.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of education and protecting the interests of students and parents, stressing that school activities must align with approved educational standards and best practices.

It urged private school owners, parents and other stakeholders to support the initiative, saying the policy would help promote discipline, consistency and academic excellence across Niger State.
