The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed sympathy and support for players and officials of Rivers United following a road accident involving the club’s delegation while travelling for a President Federation Cup fixture.

The incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt as the team made its way to Awka, Anambra State, for a Round of 16 encounter against Nasarawa United.

Although no lives were lost, some players and officials reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Reacting to the development, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi said the federation received the news with shock but expressed gratitude that the accident did not result in fatalities.

“The NFF received with shock the news of the road accident involving your players and officials,” Sanusi said.

“While we thank God that there were no fatalities, we empathise with those who sustained minor injuries and wish them a quick recovery.”

The incident has generated concern within the Nigerian football community, particularly given the increasing demands of travel across the country during domestic competitions.

Rivers United, one of Nigeria's most successful clubs in recent years, remain scheduled to face Nasarawa United in the Federation Cup Round of 16 on Saturday.

The winner of the encounter will progress to the quarter-finals of the competition. Club officials are expected to assess the fitness and readiness of affected players ahead of the crucial fixture.

The NFF reiterated its support for the club and expressed confidence that the team would overcome the setback and continue its campaign successfully.
