The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with a total of 186,291 candidates participating in the nationwide assessment.
According to the examination body, candidates sat for 12 subjects during the exercise, which drew participants from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five foreign countries.
NECO said the examination commenced on April 20 and concluded on April 30, 2026.
The results were approved and released following the successful conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held on Thursday at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chairperson of the Award Committee, Folake David, Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination and the processes leading to the release of the results.
David represented the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, at the meeting. She commended NECO for the successful administration of the examination and the timely processing and release of the results.
The meeting was attended by secondary school principals from across the country as well as members of NECO’s management team.
Meanwhile, the Award Committee approved July 22 and July 23, 2026, as the official dates for the 2026 BECE Re-sit Examination.
NECO explained that the re-sit examination is specifically intended for candidates who recorded conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies, or both subjects.
The council said the exercise is designed to provide affected candidates with another opportunity to meet the academic requirements needed for progression into Senior Secondary School One (SSS I).
According to NECO, the arrangement will enable eligible students to address deficiencies in the core subjects without having to repeat an entire academic session.
The Basic Education Certificate Examination serves as a key assessment for students completing Junior Secondary School education in Nigeria and is one of the requirements for placement into senior secondary education.
By providing a re-sit window for candidates with deficiencies in critical subjects, NECO said it aims to support academic progression while maintaining the integrity and credibility of its assessment process.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding high examination standards and ensuring that qualified candidates are given fair opportunities to continue their education without unnecessary delays.
Further details on access to results and registration procedures for the re-sit examination are expected to be communicated by the council in due course.
