The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed speculation surrounding the explosion that rocked Mushin on June 22, 2026 confirming that the incident was caused by a mechanical failure and not an improvised explosive device (IED), terrorist attack or any form of criminal activity.
Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters, following the conclusion of a comprehensive forensic and technical investigation into the incident.
The explosion occurred at No. 19 Way Street in Mushin, prompting initial concerns that it may have involved explosives. However, the police said detailed findings by experts from the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit conclusively ruled out any criminal or terrorist connection.
According to the police commissioner, the incident was initially treated as a suspected explosive occurrence in line with established security protocols and international best practices.
"Following the incident, preliminary observations and reports received at the scene raised concerns about the possibility of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion," Fatai said.
He explained that highly trained EOD-CBRN specialists conducted extensive forensic examinations, including a detailed assessment of the affected vehicle, analysis of damage patterns, evaluation of recovered fragments and interviews with witnesses.
The investigation, he said, found no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues or any blast characteristics commonly associated with explosive attacks.
"Our technical findings revealed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues or blast characteristics ordinarily associated with explosive attacks," the commissioner stated.
Police investigators also determined that the affected vehicle did not display the structural deformation, fragmentation patterns, crater effects or displacement typically associated with bomb explosions.
Rather, the incident was traced to the catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component located outside the vehicle.
According to the findings, the failure triggered a sudden release of energy that shattered the vehicle's front passenger-side glass panels and caused minor injuries to an occupant.
Based on the evidence gathered, the Lagos State Police Command officially reclassified the case from a suspected IED incident to a mechanical explosion.
Fatai reassured residents that there was no security threat linked to the incident.
"We therefore wish to reassure all residents of Lagos State that there is absolutely no evidence linking this incident to terrorism, insurgency, sabotage or any threat to public safety and security. There is no cause for alarm," he said.
The police commissioner commended residents who promptly alerted emergency and security agencies, noting that their swift response contributed significantly to the successful investigation.
He also praised emergency responders and technical experts for their professionalism in handling the situation.
While urging members of the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities, Fatai assured that all future incidents involving explosions would continue to receive thorough professional scrutiny before conclusions are reached.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to transparency, professionalism and fact-based reporting in the discharge of its responsibility to protect lives and property.
