Former Liverpool striker Divock Origi has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a career that produced some of the most memorable moments in modern Liverpool history.
The Belgian forward, now 31, confirmed his decision through an emotional message on social media, declaring that he had achieved everything he set out to accomplish in the game.
“My purpose in the game is fulfilled,” Origi wrote.
“I lived out my childhood dreams, played on the biggest stages and won the biggest trophies.”
While Origi may not have always been a regular starter, he earned legendary status among Liverpool supporters for delivering when it mattered most.
Few players embodied the role of a clutch performer quite like the Belgian, whose crucial goals helped shape one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.
His most iconic moment came during Liverpool’s 2019 UEFA Champions League triumph when he scored the decisive second goal in the final against Tottenham Hotspur, sealing a 2-0 victory and securing the club’s sixth European crown.
Yet that strike was only one chapter in a remarkable story.
Liverpool fans also remember his dramatic late winner in the Merseyside derby against Everton, as well as his unforgettable contribution to the club’s historic Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona.
Across seven years at Anfield between 2015 and 2022, Origi collected an enviable list of honours, including the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
Although often deployed as a squad player, his ability to deliver decisive moments earned him enduring affection among supporters.
Reflecting on his career, Origi thanked teammates, coaches, supporters and family members who accompanied him throughout his football journey.
“To all my fans, the clubs, my teammates and my family, this will forever be ours. Thank you,” he wrote.
“The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling.”
Origi’s career also included spells with Lille, Wolfsburg, AC Milan and Nottingham Forest, allowing him to compete across several of Europe’s leading leagues.
At international level, he represented Belgium during one of the country’s most talented football generations, featuring alongside players such as Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
Although his playing career ends at a relatively young age, Origi departs with a legacy that many footballers can only dream of a career filled with trophies, unforgettable goals and a lasting place in Liverpool folklore.
For Liverpool supporters in particular, his name will forever be associated with moments of drama, resilience and glory on football’s biggest stages.
