“Least Bothered” – Sowore Reacts After Remand in Kuje Prison

Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has said he remains unbothered after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Sowore made the statement on Monday via his social media accounts following the ruling by Justice Mohammed Umar, who directed that he be kept in custody pending the hearing of his motion challenging the revocation of his bail and a bench warrant issued for his arrest.

The court adjourned proceedings to June 24 for the hearing of the motion for stay of execution of the bail revocation order.

Justice Umar had earlier, on June 16, revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear in court for his trial and also issued a bench warrant for his arrest following an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN).

The judge also dismissed an application filed by Sowore seeking his recusal from the case over alleged bias.

Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN) later filed a motion requesting a stay of execution of the bail revocation order.

Reacting to Monday’s ruling, Sowore said he had informed the court that his absence was due to consultations with his new legal team, but the judge proceeded to order his remand.

He, however, maintained that the development would not deter him from his political stance and activism.

“I need hardly say that I am the least bothered by this development,” he wrote.

“Imprisonment has never defeated a just cause and it never will,” he added.

Sowore urged his supporters to remain steadfast, insisting that his struggle against what he described as oppression would continue.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over alleged false statements made against President Bola Tinubu in social media posts in which he referred to the president as “a criminal.”

The case is expected to continue at the next hearing scheduled for June 24.
