The death toll from the collapse of a two-storey building in the Alakija Bus Stop area of Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, has risen to nine, while 27 people were rescued alive as emergency officials concluded search and rescue operations at the site.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed on Friday that rescue efforts had been successfully completed following an intensive multi-agency operation involving emergency responders, heavy equipment and community volunteers.
In a statement issued by LASEMA's Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, the agency said all rescued victims received immediate pre-hospital medical attention before being transferred to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
"Twenty-seven persons were rescued alive through coordinated efforts by the LASEMA Response Team, sister agencies and members of the community. Victims received immediate pre-hospital care from LASAMBUS and were transferred to nearby hospitals for further treatment," the statement said.
LASEMA disclosed that nine bodies were recovered from the rubble, including four adults who had died before emergency responders arrived and five additional victims, among them a two-year-old girl.
According to the agency, all recovered bodies were respectfully bagged and handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for identification and subsequent release to their families.
The rescue operation was supervised by LASEMA's Director of Operations, Olanrewaju Akinsanya, alongside the agency's Cappa Base Coordinator, Salami.
To accelerate the operation, LASEMA deployed a heavy-duty excavator to complement two excavators already operating at the scene, enabling emergency workers to safely access trapped victims and clear the debris down to ground level.
Following the tragedy, the Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to immediately conduct structural integrity assessments on adjoining buildings and enforce strict compliance with building regulations within the area.
The government also urged residents to promptly report distressed or defective buildings to both LASBCA and LASEMA to help prevent future disasters.
The incident occurred less than 24 hours after another building under construction collapsed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, highlighting renewed concerns over the increasing number of structural failures across the country.
Industry experts have repeatedly linked the recurring incidents to factors including the use of substandard building materials, poor construction practices, weak regulatory enforcement and failure to adhere to approved building standards.
