British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party and informed King Charles III of his decision, bringing his premiership to an unexpected end amid mounting pressure from within his own party.
Speaking in a statement outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said he had accepted the verdict of Labour lawmakers over his future as party leader and would step aside once a successor is elected.
“I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party,” Starmer said. “I accept that answer with good grace.”
The outgoing prime minister disclosed that he had already informed the King of his decision and requested Labour’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of electing a new leader.
According to the timetable announced by Starmer, nominations for the Labour leadership contest will open on July 9 and close on July 16, before Parliament begins its summer recess. The process is expected to produce a new Labour leader before lawmakers return in September.
Despite announcing his departure, Starmer said he would remain in office as prime minister until the leadership contest is concluded to ensure what he described as an orderly transfer of power.
“I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” he said.
He also pledged his “full and unequivocal support” to whoever emerges as his successor.
In his farewell remarks, Starmer defended the achievements of his government, citing economic growth, rising wages, increased infrastructure investment, reductions in NHS waiting lists, expanded workers rights and increased defence spending.
The Labour leader argued that his administration had delivered significant reforms since taking office, including measures aimed at tackling poverty, improving public services and strengthening border security.
An emotional moment came as Starmer paid tribute to his wife, Victoria, describing her as his “rock” throughout his political journey.
“When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic,” he said, his voice breaking.

He also thanked his children, friends, colleagues, civil servants and staff at Downing Street for their support during his time in office.
Starmer’s resignation follows days of intense speculation over his future and growing calls from sections of the Labour Party for a change in leadership.
His departure opens the door to a potentially fierce contest for the leadership of Britain’s governing party, with attention now turning to possible contenders who could succeed him and lead Labour into the next general election.
For now, Starmer remains Britain’s prime minister, but the race to determine the country’s next political leader has officially begun.
