Japan Hammer Tunisia 4-0 To Keep World Cup Dream Alive

By OUR REPORTER · 21/06/2026 7:15 AM · 3 min read

Japan delivered one of the most convincing performances of the World Cup so far, sweeping aside Tunisia 4-0 to secure a crucial Group F victory and officially end the North Africans' hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

The Samurai Blue took control from the opening minutes at Monterrey Stadium and never looked back, producing a disciplined and clinical display that left Tunisia overwhelmed throughout the contest.

The result lifts Japan to four points in Group F, level with leaders Netherlands, and puts them in a strong position ahead of their decisive final group match against Sweden.

For Tunisia, the defeat capped a disastrous campaign that included managerial upheaval and back-to-back heavy losses.

Just days after suffering a 5-1 defeat to Sweden and replacing head coach Sabri Lamouchi with former Saudi Arabia manager Herve Renard, Tunisia needed a positive response.

Instead, they were behind inside four minutes.

Japan launched a swift counterattack and Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada finished from close range after being picked out by Keito Nakamura to hand the Asian side an early lead.

The goal immediately put Tunisia under pressure and Japan continued to dictate possession, territory and tempo.

Their dominance was rewarded again in the 31st minute when Ayase Ueda produced an excellent finish from the edge of the penalty area, threading his effort through a defender's legs and into the far corner.

Tunisia struggled to impose themselves on the contest and frequently found themselves chasing the ball as Japan controlled proceedings with their slick passing and movement.

Junya Ito effectively ended the contest after the break, racing through on goal before calmly rolling his finish beyond goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen to make it 3-0.

Ueda then completed the rout with his second goal of the evening, directing a looping header into the far corner to seal a comprehensive victory.

Japan's superiority was reflected throughout the match.

The Samurai Blue dominated possession, created the clearer opportunities and never looked threatened by a Tunisia side that failed to register a single shot on target.

Tunisia's attacks were repeatedly neutralised by a well-organised Japanese defence, while their midfield struggled to cope with Japan's relentless movement and control.

The victory leaves Japan firmly in contention for a place in the knockout rounds. At minimum, they remain strongly positioned to qualify among the best third-placed teams, but they will aim to secure automatic progression when they face Sweden in their final Group F fixture.

Tunisia, meanwhile, will conclude their campaign against group leaders Netherlands with nothing more than pride left to play for.

The defeat confirms their elimination and extends a disappointing World Cup run that never gathered momentum.

Japan's performance was built on collective quality, but several players stood out.

Kamada's early goal set the tone, Ueda's brace highlighted his finishing quality, while Japan's midfield controlled the rhythm of the game from start to finish.

The official player ratings reflected that dominance, with Ao Tanaka emerging as the standout performer after another influential display in the centre of the pitch.

For Japan, the result represents another major step toward the last 32.

For Tunisia, it marks the end of a campaign they will want to forget.
