The Imo State Police Command has identified six officers captured in a viral video allegedly showing the assault of a young man in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Henry Okoye, the Command said the incident occurred on June 22, 2026, at Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba, and that a preliminary review had led to the identification of all officers involved.

The officers were named as Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu and Corporal Amos Sunny.

According to the Command, the officers have been taken into custody while disciplinary procedures and a formal investigation are underway.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, directed that a comprehensive investigation be conducted to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police authorities said the probe would determine the extent of the officers actions and whether they violated established operational and professional standards.

"The officers have been taken into custody, and disciplinary procedures have been initiated in line with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force," the Command said.

The police described the conduct seen in the viral footage as inconsistent with the values, ethics and professional standards expected of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on police misconduct, abuse of authority and violations of citizens rights.

The development comes amid renewed public scrutiny of police conduct and accountability following the circulation of videos showing alleged incidents of excessive use of force by security personnel in different parts of the country.

While the circumstances leading to the encounter remain under investigation, the Imo State Police Command assured residents that the matter would be handled transparently and in accordance with due process.

Commissioner Bosso also pledged that the findings of the investigation and the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings would be made public once concluded.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course.
