The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against travelling outside the country without valid passports, visas and approved immigration documents, cautioning that irregular migration exposes citizens to trafficking, exploitation and other serious dangers.
The warning was issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in a public advisory posted on its official X platform on Monday and signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi. According to the agency, all international travel must comply strictly with established immigration procedures and approved border regulations, stressing that any attempt to bypass official processes or use unauthorised routes constitutes a violation of Nigerian law.
The Immigration Service expressed concern over what it described as the growing activities of fraudulent migration syndicates targeting unsuspecting Nigerians, particularly youths, with false promises of jobs, education and better opportunities abroad. “These schemes often result in forced labour, human trafficking and other forms of exploitation,” the Service warned.
The NIS stated that many victims of irregular migration end up stranded in foreign countries under harsh conditions after being deceived by unregistered agents and criminal networks.
It stressed that no legitimate travel arrangement bypasses official immigration channels or designated border posts, urging Nigerians to be cautious of individuals offering shortcuts or undocumented travel opportunities.
The agency further advised citizens to verify all travel, recruitment and relocation offers through recognised government platforms and accredited institutions before making commitments.
Members of the public were also encouraged to report suspicious migration activities, fake travel agents and illegal border operations to the nearest Immigration Service office or other security agencies.
The warning comes amid increasing concerns across Africa over illegal migration routes, cross-border trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable youths seeking economic opportunities abroad.
The Immigration Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders while protecting citizens from falling victim to transnational criminal networks operating under the guise of migration assistance.
