The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arraigned 15 Chinese nationals and nine Nigerians before the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged illegal lithium mining activities in Nasarawa State.
The defendants appeared before Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia following their arrest during an enforcement operation conducted by the NSCDC Mining Marshals on May 16, 2026. According to the corps, the suspects were allegedly engaged in the unlawful extraction of lithium within Kokona Local Government Area without possessing valid mining licences or legal authorisation.
The NSCDC stated that the activities took place within a mineral title area covered by Exploration Licence No. 036528-EL, which is legally owned by TIMADIX Geomin Consult Limited. Investigators further alleged that the illegal mining operations were carried out within designated coordinates covered by the licence.
The Chinese nationals facing prosecution include Liu Jiabin, Hu Yunzhong, Zhou Yinmou, Zhao Feng, Zhang Yu, Tian Shuqun, Huang Ruqian, Liu Yanliang, Yang Xiaobin, Huang Meiyun, Yuan Tao, Jia Qiuyong, Chen Menghao, Deng Peiming and Yu Yanhai.
Also standing trial are Thankgod Sani, Abubakar Nuhu, Jonathan Akpa Sunday, Pius Favour, Agada Joshua, Sani Osu, Haruna Asambe, Elenekou Akoete Joli and corporate defendant C and A International New Energy Limited.
The case forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining activities and protect Nigeria’s solid minerals sector from exploitation. Following the arraignment, the court adjourned proceedings until June 18, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
The development underscores growing regulatory efforts to ensure compliance with mining laws as Nigeria seeks to maximise the economic benefits of its vast mineral resources.
