The Inspector General of Police has ordered heightened security deployments and proactive policing measures nationwide ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The directive, issued to Commissioners of Police and Tactical Commanders across all state commands and the Federal Capital Territory, forms part of efforts to strengthen public safety during the festive period. According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, operational measures already activated include the deployment of tactical teams, intelligence operatives and conventional police personnel to Eid prayer grounds, highways, motor parks, recreational centres and other public locations.

The police said security operations would also involve intensified visibility policing, coordinated patrols and stop-and-search exercises across the country. Authorities added that intelligence-led surveillance operations were being expanded to deter criminal activity and ensure rapid response to potential security threats. “The Nigeria Police Force places the highest premium on public vigilance,” the statement said. “Every Nigerian has a role to play in keeping our communities safe during this festive season.”

The police urged citizens to promptly report suspicious individuals, unattended objects and unusual movements capable of posing security risks. The force specifically warned against ignoring suspicious activities around prayer grounds, public gatherings and critical infrastructure. “Do not ignore suspicious activity. Do not assume someone else has already reported it,” the statement added. “Your call is confidential and could prevent a tragedy.”

Disu also extended Eid-el-Kabir greetings to Muslim faithful across the country while praying for peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria.

The heightened security measures come amid ongoing concerns over banditry, kidnapping and attacks on public spaces in several parts of the country.
