Gunmen Kill NSCDC Officer, Abduct Daughter in Kogi Assault

Fresh concerns over worsening insecurity in Kogi State have emerged following a deadly attack by suspected kidnappers in Odo-Ere, headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area, where a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer was killed and his daughter abducted.

The attack, which occurred on Monday evening, sent panic across the community as residents hurried indoors amid reports of sustained gunfire and fears of further violence.

Sources within the area identified the slain officer simply as Mr. Ayo, a serving member of the NSCDC.

Witnesses said the attackers stormed the area and opened fire, fatally shooting the officer in the head before abducting his first daughter and escaping into nearby surroundings.

Residents rushed the officer to a medical facility in a desperate attempt to save his life, but doctors reportedly confirmed him dead on arrival.

His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary.

The abduction has heightened anxiety among residents, many of whom say they are increasingly vulnerable to repeated attacks by criminal gangs operating across parts of Kogi West.

As of Tuesday, security agencies had yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, while efforts to rescue the abducted victim were reportedly ongoing.

The latest assault adds to a disturbing pattern of violent attacks that have plagued communities in the Okun axis of Kogi State in recent months.

Local residents say kidnappers and armed gangs have become increasingly bold, targeting villages, highways and residential communities with little warning.

Just days before the Odo-Ere incident, gunmen reportedly attacked Aiyegunle-Igun in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, killing two persons and abducting dozens of residents.

Several high-profile abductions also remain unresolved, including those involving relatives of traditional rulers and community leaders in the region.

The persistent attacks have fuelled growing frustration among residents who accuse authorities of failing to adequately protect vulnerable communities.

The renewed violence comes shortly after the Kogi State Government and police authorities launched a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), an initiative aimed at strengthening intelligence gathering and combating organised criminal activities across the state.

While government officials expressed optimism that the new unit would help curb insecurity, Monday’s attack has renewed questions about the effectiveness of current security measures.

Community leaders and residents are now calling for stronger military and police presence across Yagba West and neighbouring local government areas, warning that continued attacks could further undermine economic activities and public confidence in security institutions.

For many residents, the killing of a security officer in his own community has become a stark reminder of the growing challenge confronting authorities as criminal groups continue to expand their operations across parts of Kogi State.
