Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has commended the Nigerian Army for intensifying its operations against pipeline vandalism and illegal oil bunkering, saying the sustained crackdown is improving security and boosting Nigeria's crude oil production.
Fubara gave the commendation on Friday while receiving the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The Army chief was accompanied by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, and other senior military officers as part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration, which is being hosted in Rivers State.
'Operations are yielding results'
Speaking during the visit, Governor Fubara said the Army's efforts to combat crude oil theft, pipeline sabotage and illegal refining were producing tangible results for both Rivers State and the national economy.
According to him, the military's operations have helped reduce disruptions to oil production, leading to increased crude output and improved government revenue.
The governor also praised the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army for its role in maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across Rivers State.
"The efforts of the military in curbing disruptions to oil production have resulted in the production of a higher quantum of crude oil and more revenue for the country," Fubara said.
Fubara congratulated Lieutenant General Shaibu on his appointment as Chief of Army Staff, expressing confidence in his leadership.
He said the Nigerian Army had recorded noticeable improvements in security since Shaibu assumed office.
"I'm commending you because within the short period that you've been appointed, I can conveniently say that there are a lot of positive things that our state has recorded in terms of security," the governor said.
"I wish that your tenure will record even greater achievements and positive improvements for the Nigerian Army."
Earlier, Lieutenant General Shaibu said his visit to Rivers State was part of activities lined up for the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration, which is taking place in Port Harcourt.
The annual event brings together military personnel, government officials and stakeholders to commemorate the history of the Nigerian Army while highlighting its role in national security and defence.
